Romeo Astron received a plum draw when he was allocated trap one in Saturday’s £10,000 BGBF British Bred Puppy Cup final at Dunstall Park, according to trainer Tom Heilbron.
The August ’24 son of dual Category One champion Fabulous Azurra announced his presence on the Open Race scene only last month by qualifying for the Arena Racing Company Puppy Trophy final at Sunderland.
The three-times race winner is now on the cusp of winning a Category One title at his first attempt and will start Saturday’s feature race as hot favourite after dominating both his heat and semi-final.
It’s the first time the competition has been held at Dunstall Park, and will be the Wolverhampton venue’s fourth major final since it held its first fixture in September following a multi-million investment into the future of greyhound racing by Arena Racing Company.
To celebrate, the track is opening its doors for free to racegoers who book online in advance with each racegoer able to claim up to six free tickets.
Romeo Astron’s trainer Tom Heilbron is now hopeful of landing a first Category One success of the year.
“It’s been a long time since I looked at a greyhound and got really excited,” said Tom.
“He has bullet early pace, and seems to be staying on stronger in his races which is a huge positive.
“When he’s in front, he’s top class and it will take a very good greyhound to beat him on Saturday if he hits the first bend in front.
“I thought Dunstall Park might stretch him, but perhaps not. He couldn’t have come away any slower in the ARC Puppy Trophy final at Sunderland last month, so hopefully we can make up for that at the weekend.”
Other greyhounds represented in the final will travel from as far as Yorkshire and Essex.
Central Park’s Maxine Locke runs Bonville Kane while Sheffield is represented by Keefill Sequoia (Sean Parker) and Harton Whirlwind (Rose Draper).
Untold Dinero (Dave Lee) and Aero Clipper (Richie Taberner) complete the line-up.
Tickets for Saturday’s £10,000 BGBF British Bred Puppy Cup final at Dunstall Park are free and can be reserved online via www.dunstallpark-greyhounds.co.uk. Doors open at 5.30pm, with the first of 12 races on the night off at 6.08pm.
